colonialism

Colonialism is the “domination of a people or area by a foreign state or nation [in order to extend and maintain] a nation’s political and economic control over another people or area.” It relies on “the subjugation of one people to another,” which means forcing one group of people to submit to the control of another group of people. Many problems in areas that have experienced colonisation (such as poverty, famine, or violence) are not inherent to those regions, but were created by and are the lasting impacts of Western colonial violence. For this reason, we should be conscious that our approaches to addressing poverty, violence, and exploitation do not exacerbate or replicate colonial patterns of power and control.
