safeguarding policy

A safeguarding policy is an organisational policy that outlines how an organisation or group will do their best to ensure that people do not experience harm, abuse, or exploitation as a result of an engagement with the organisation, and that there are clear protocols in place for how to respond if such harm happens. Safeguarding protocols are more than trauma-informed protocols, and outline things like grievances and accountability. Many organisations require safeguarding policies for any engagements with “vulnerable people,” but any community-engaged programmes may benefit from one. Safeguarding policies are not typical in U.S. spaces but are more common in U.K. and global development work, and they must be consistently implemented without bias in order to have any benefit.
