sensationalism

Sensationalism is when narratives, images, or retelling of experiences are designed in a way to evoke a high amount of shock, pity, interest, or excitement in ways that may obscure the broader issue or confuse the general public. Sensationalised approaches may sacrifice accuracy or balance in an effort to convey the uniqueness or intensity of the story, which often ends up creating an othering narrative about the subjects of the story. This othering narrative can be negative (such as when the subject of the story is framed as weak, foolish, or immoral), but even “positive” othering (such as when the subject of the story is framed as heroic, brave, or excessively strong) can have harmful, isolating, or misleading impacts.
