Tokenism is a practice in which people with diverse lived experiences are highlighted in a group’s work or given limited leadership opportunities so that an organisation can claim an equity practice or “lived experience leadership,” without a willingness to fundamentally transform the organisation’s systems and practices. Examples of this would include engaging impacted people to speak about policy on behalf of an organisation while restricting their speech to talking points, putting impacted people into positions of leadership without providing them equitable access to professional development and skill-building, or creating a programme with limited collaboration from impacted communities and then inviting people with lived experience to “review” a completed product and provide minor revisions.
